Celebration of Stars Luncheon

The Northeast Tennessee Workforce Investment Board (NETWIB) have recognized regional companies who have been instrumental in furthering their employee’s education at the Celebration of the Stars luncheon which was held at the Bristol Motor Speedway on April 19, 2007.

Mr. Jim Alford, Governor Phil Bredesen’s and Commissioner James Neeley’s representative from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, presented the Incumbent Worker Grants to the 6 companies who have received a part of the $275,000.  Incumbent Worker Training grants assist existing employers with training needs and averting possible layoffs. These companies must match their grant dollars with a similar investment by the company.

“The Incumbent Worker Training Grants assist companies in staying competitive and increase the skills of their employees,” said Governor Bredesen. “The training grants are fundamental in assisting the growth of Tennessee’s economy.”

“The Incumbent Worker Training Program provides grant funding for customized training for existing businesses,” said Commissioner Neeley. “I am proud to award this grant money to keep area workers on the job.”

This event is significant for two reasons:

1)   To recognize those employers who offer their employees an opportunity to achieve and improve their skill and productivity through attainment of additional skills and/or credentials, such as receiving their GED, Associates degree or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree; and

2)  To present “checks” to the region’s employers who were recognized by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development and who received funds to provide skill training for their employees.

The NETWIB continues its strategic emphasis on Incumbent Worker training.  Building upon historical approaches resulting from the investment of more than $8,000,000 in direct support of local employers for employee training.

The NETWIB provided approximately $350,000 in employer based training during fiscal years 05 and 06.  These investments were made possible through use of WIA formula dollars and Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Incumbent Worker funds.

The twelve companies that participated in the Northeast Tennessee Workforce Investment Board “The Best Keep Getting Better” calendar and their honorees will also be presented awards for their company’s educational programs.
