Washington
County was created in 1777 by Act of North Carolina, and was
Tennessee's first organized county. The county was the first in the
nation to be named for George Washington.

Sullivan County was created
in 1779 from Washington County. The county is named in honor of
John Sullivan who was a Revolutionary War Officer, member of the
Continental Congress, attorney general, US District Judge and Governor
of New Hampshire.

Carter County was created
in 1796 from Washington County and named in honor of Landon Carter. Landon Carter was Speaker of the State of Franklin Senate
and its Secretary of State.

Unicoi County was created
in 1875 from Carter and Washington Counties. The name "Unicoi" is
shared with the Southern Appalachian Mountains and is
probably derived from the Indian word "u'nika" meaning white, foglike,

Johnson County was
created in 1836 from Carter County and named in honor of Thomas
Johnson, a prominent citizen and one of the first magistrates of Johnson
County.

Jonesborough, founded
in 1779, is Tennessee's oldest Town and
is the County Seat of Washington County. The Town of Jonesborough has
been carefully restored as one of the nation's most authentic historic
districts from the period 1790-1870. Jonesborough is home to the
International Storytelling
Center that features numerous annual special events and
festivals.

Bristol Motor Speedway
in Bristol, Tennessee is the world famous half-mile track on the
NASCAR Nextel Cup racing circuit. Bristol is the highest banked track in the
NASCAR racing program which makes for an exciting race that appeals to both
drivers and spectators. Bristol holds two annual NASCAR races, in the
Spring and Fall. Attendance is in excess of
160,000 and there is not a bad seat in the
house.
